Twitter so far

As you can see on my sidebar I have a running list of my tweets, I have had a twitter account for most of the summer now. So far I have only posted 102 times, but that doesnt really matter because Im enjoying the links that others post on their accounts. Its more fun to watch my Twitter program (Syrinx [Mac]) populate with links as compared to trying to watch a whole window of RSS feeds. I use Tweetdeck for my iPhone, since I dont like Adobe AIR applications. I follow the Google Blog, Developer Works, boxee, Electronista, net, tuts+, macdailynews, and a sling of friends and acquaintances, in all I have found it to be a useful tool and a fun way to find links.

Ive found it a useful way to keep in touch with friends instead of calling on the mobile or sending an SMS or email. Sometimes it takes a few days but usually the conversations are like a chess match by mail, the move doesnt have to happen immediately.

I just thought this was a cool mashup example. It goes back to that old Pink Floyd sync coincidence ala Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon, which works perfectly BTW if you start the album at the MGM second lion roar.  Anyway it makes perfect sense that developers should find ways to allow creatives to use their tools and sites to make new things. We all gain from sharing ideas and tools whether technologically, socially, or mentally. Mashups can gather so much power together in a single tool that can help us see data in a whole new way that has the possibility to create whole new technologies, philosophies, social movements, even efficient government. Currently we are seeing a movement of mashups that utilize government data for use by companies and individuals for research or better allocation of funds in a way that is revolutionary in how we use data to alter our living spaces or social fabric.

Pod/Vod casting has much potential and personally I think the best ones are howto videos. With people showing off skills or walking through how to do a project so that others may copy their project. What piques my interest lately is iTunesU that Apple has set up partnerships with Universities around the world where classes are recorded and anyone with an online connection can learn from the best professors in the worlds best universities. The most recent one I watched was a Stanford University class on designing for the iPhone. The class website was accessible to anyone who wanted to download the reading materials. The screencast of what the professor was doing in showing students how easy it was to work with Apple’s Xcode software really made it easy to follow along and take away some of the fear of working with a programming interface.

Im thankful that Podcasting overwhelmingly attracts people who genuinely want to share their knowledge and are happy to answer questions. What the world has gained from the rise of podcasting is great as its not about someones ego or selling a viewpoint like we see on network news programs with talking heads screaming at each other or verbally scratching someones back for agreeing with the hosts opinion.

WordPress for iPhone 2: Mobile Blogging Just Got Easier.

Social Media seems to be having an interesting side effect of empowering the people who speak the truth about an idea or product. Its not so much about how much money you throw at something to get the word out. The customers have so much more power to approve or disapprove a product or service. Its more important for companies to maintain an aura of community interest with the consumer cause that is who is doing the most to sell great products. With bloggers able to be their own bosses and maintain a safe distance from corporate politics they dont have to compromise their values or reputation to sell something to keep a job. Now its merely having the street credit and some good writing skills to be respected and listened to that can sell or doom a product or service.
